Jaragun is restoring a 1.2 ha wetland to provide additional habitat for aquatic and wetland-dependent bird species. The first step involved installation of a solar powered video camera by Dr Nathan Waltham, a wetland specialist from TropWATER (JCU). The video camera will provide a visual record of improvement in wetland function and native habitat over time. Particularly exciting will be use of an algorithm to identify bird species from video footage, which will enable monitoring of increased usage of the ecosystem by wetland-dependent bird species.
