Candle Bush (Senna alata) is an environmental weed with distinctive large yellow “candlestick” flowers that grows as a tree on roadsides, waterways and disturbed areas of the catchment. Candle Bush is a priority weed for Jaragun due to its aggressive nature in areas with a high watertable like the Russell River catchment. Over the last 2 months, Jaragun's Traditional Owner team has been hard at work removing large thickets of Candle Bush along a 5 km stretch of Babinda Creek and on the highway at Moolaba Creek. It was a huge achievement to complete this work before the wet season to help prevent dispersal of Candle Bush seeds throughout catchment waterways.

ECOSYSTEMS
Preservation our way of life
We perform system repair to protect or improve the ecosystem services we depend on to maintain our social, cultural and economic well-being.
Our approach is to work with catchment processes by maintaining and improving an ecosystem's structural components and managing current and emerging threats to their functioning.
Our activities involve a high level of integration with other initiatives to improve overall outcomes for the environment, which are enhanced through revegetation with native plant species, control of pest species and planning for climate change.
